Visit to Vammala - September 2002
A very successful first meeting was held in Finland from 4-8 September at which George Davidson was accompanied by acting Rector, Karen Prophet, Head Girl, Christine Aitken and sixth-year student Paul O?Donnell. They met with staff and students of the Finnish school and the partner schools? co-ordinators, fleshed out future project work and planned the proposed project web site. The students themselves came up with lots of suggestions for future projects and are looking forward to getting them underway.
The first picture below show Christine and Paul discussing projects with some of the Finnish, German and Italian students.
The second picture shows the co-ordinators of the project in each school ? Ingrid Stritzelberger of Germany; George Davidson, Peebles; Hilkka Rajakorpi, Finland; and Bruna Taglibue of Italy. The picture was taken during a very pleasant walk in the Finnish countryside by a lake before enjoying a meal with the staff and families of the Finnish school. The evening was rounded off with an international sing-song.
Other pictures include one of the restored St Olav's Church which was destroyed by fire in 1997. During the exchange visit in 1998, a sum of £100 was raised for the Restoration Fund during a Ceilidh organised by the Peebles Parents and Teachers Association.
The Finnish staff organised a most enjoyable social programme and sight-seeing in the area around Vammala and in the nearby town of Tampere. All the visitors thanked the host co-ordinator Hilkka Rajakorpi and the rest of the Finnish staff and students for the generous hospitality provided during their stay.
