Independence Day - 6 December

The 6th of December is Finland's Independence Day. We gained our independence in 1917. This year, as usual, it was celebrated on the 5th day in our school, at Vammala senior secondary school. The event was held on Friday during the school day from 12.20 pm onwards. It consisted of the traditional handing over of the baton of liberty, donated by the war veterans, charming music performances and a few speeches made among other people by the chairman of the students? union, Anni Järvinen, and the headmaster of our school, Antti Rajakorpi. This year Irish music and a Finnish classical song "Aamu lakeuksilla" performed by the school's music group, echoed in the big assembly hall. One of the main highlights, however, was giving the reports and white caps to the undergraduates of autumn 2003.
Both the independence celebration and announcing this year's undergraduates were combined to the event, it all culminating in the joyful songs "Gaudeamus igitur" (always sang after the graduates have put their white caps on), and "Maamme", our national anthem, honouring the importance of the event.
