The school, Vammalan lukio, which stands by lake Rautavesi, was established in 1904, and has about 300 students between the ages 16 and 18. The number of staff is 20. The principal since 1991 Dr Antti Rajakorpi and it takes two to four years to complete the studies and graduate. At special request you can even make a 5-year-programme.
Foreign languages taught: Swedish, English, German, French, Spanish, Russian
The great number of optional courses in different subjects guarantees that the students can make themselves study lines according to their own interests. Such lines may be eg art, music, sciences, languages. Special diplomas can be completed in art and sport as well as the Finnish language. Vammalan lukio has also co-operation with the local vocational schools. Senior secondary and vocational education can be combined into a four-year programme. A new volleyball-oriented line for boys will start in autumn 2003.
The school was renovated in the years 1996-1998 giving the interiors a nice light look and the classrooms were equipped with modern teaching devices.
The school system:
The school year is divided into five different periods with different schedules both for teachers and students.
Each period ends in a test week.
Subjects are studied in courses each consisting of about 38 lessons
The minimum number of courses before graduation is 75
A non-year-class system (free school lunches, no school fees)
International co-operation:
Kilakala Secondary School in Tanzania, Africa since 1998. The students? union has raised money for equipping the school with teaching material, teacher training. There have been exchanges both for teachers and students.
Socrates projects: Two Lingua E exchanges with Peebles High School, Scotland in the years 1998 and 2000. A new 3-year Comenius 1 has started in autumn 2002 together with Liceo Artistico Arese, Italy; Otto-Hahn Gymnasium, Germany and Peebles High School, Scotland.
