The Arts

Logo Competition

A competition to design a logo which captures the spirit of the Comenius Project. The logo will be used as a symbol of the project on this web site and perhaps for such things as printing on t-shirts or caps. There is a 50 euros prize for the winning entry!

Using a Second Language

French Texts

Students from partner schools prepared a variety of creative illustrations to French texts. Various methods were used to do this - Powerpoint presentations, sound recordings and one German student even made an animated cartoon using "Flash" which was most impressive. When all the presentations are available, they will be put on to on CD and made available to each participating school. Copies can then be acquired from the school's Comenius Co-ordinator.

Literature

Short Stories

Comparing the reactions of the students to 3 short stories taken from a collection of contemporary Scottish short stories which were entries to a competition sponsored by the whisky company "The Macallan" and the "Scotland on Sunday" newspaper. Dorothy Alexander, a former pupil of Peebles High School, won the top prize in the competition.

Shakespearian Sonnets

A study of Shakespearian Sonnets and using Microsoft Powerpoint to present students' work.

European Issues

National Identity

Students were asked to say if they regarded themselves as "European" and from this followed a discussion about national identity.

World War II

This project took the form of a Remembrance Day Service to be held at Peebles High School in the week leading up to 11 November - Armistice Day. A Powerpoint presentation included reflections from German and Finnish students as well as the input from the Senior Students' Council at Peebles High School.

Students' Issues

Drugs and Alcohol

A survey of students' attitudes to smoking, alcohol and drugs.

Rooms

Students from the partner schools describe their own "spaces" (usually their bedrooms). Reporting will be in the form of Powerpoint Presentations which the participating schools will exchange with each other. Some examples of presentations will be available on the web site.

Summer Jobs

A survey of senior students to discover what sorts of vacational jobs they had over the summer holidays.

Business/Economics

Price Watch

Comparing prices of goods in all 3 partner countries.

Local Industries

Students study local industries and produce a brief profile of the company in the form of a Powerpoint presentation.

Business Matters

An in-depth study of a company in each of the partner countries looking at a number of issues such as the use of languages, women in industry, the effects of globalisation etc. The study will involve visiting the company and interviewing some of the management. Reports are likely to take a variety of forms including video footage of the companies and of the interviews with staff. Issues arising will be compared and discussed by the students after the studies have been completed and exchanged between the partner schools.
